Now She Can Help
Until recently, villagers from Wenhua in China’s Yunnan province had to travel six hours by bus to Kunming for eye care.
"Before my ORBIS training, I had no ophthalmic knowledge and concentrated on treating minor ailments like colds," said village health worker, Tian Lan. Working closely with Lijiang Charity Eye Hospital, ORBIS recently tailored a four-day ophthalmic training session for village-level doctors and medical professionals like Lan. Topics covered included screening and treating common forms of blindness and case referrals. Our ultimate aim was to expand pediatric eye care expertise and availability across Yunnan province by enabling local health workers to offer basic eye care services during house calls.
"Today, I diagnosed a villager with bilateral cataracts and screened school children for refractive errors which I was never able to do before." Tian Lan is proud to have successfully completed her training and enable villagers to see again.
