How ORBIS Transformed Mamite's Life
Unfortunately, Ethiopia is all too often the backdrop of the blinding eye infection called trachoma. Left untreated, trachoma leads to trichiasis, a painful, blinding disease where the eyelashes turn inwards and scratch the surface of the eye. Mamite had her life transformed thanks to simple surgery by an ORBIS trained doctor.

A Brighter Future for Baby Daffa
Two years after being treated by long-time volunteer faculty Dr. Jamie Brandt, ORBIS visited Baby Daffa in Jakarta to see his progress. After his procedure in 2010, he continued to undergo checks with the local eye disease experts who had been trained by ORBIS staff to make sure his glaucoma did not return.

Follow-up with Quang Chien in Vietnam
Two years after being treated for strabismus, which was impairing his eyesight, stunting his visual development and making him feel different around the other kids in his school, a happy and healthy Quang Chien came to visit Dr. Brad Black who had returned to Da Nang Eye Hospital in Vietnam for a Flying Eye Hospital program.

The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital program in Mongolia offered local eye care professionals continuing medical education toward the growing issue of blindness related to diabetes. The Diabetes epidemic is a global issue affecting more than 350 million people - nearly half living in Asia.

Meet Gerel from Mongolia
Gerel Vaanchig, a first-year medical student treated onboard the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital in Mongolia. Born with congenital ptosis in her left eye, her surgery not only helped her regained her self-esteem and confidence but it has changed her life forever.

ROP in Mongolia
Working with the State Maternal Research Hospital (Mother and Child Hospital), Dr. Paul Chan conducted one of the first ever continuing medical education programs to address the avoidable blindness issue of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) during a 2011 Flying Eye Hospital visit to Mongolia.

Pediatric Outreach Campaign in China
During the Flying Eye Hospital program in Dalian, China, ORBIS staff joined our partner hospital, He Eye Hospital, for an outreach program in the outskirts of the city. The ORBIS staff screened 400 kindergarten children and provided a lecture series for the parents of those children.

Pediatric Glaucoma in Syria
In the case of pediatric (or congenital) glaucoma, undetected and/or untreated cases can lead to irreversible blindness. This was the case for brother and sister, Saleh and Jenan, who live in Deir Ezzor, Syria and had each lost vision in one eye due to untreated congenital glaucoma.
