Biomedical Engineer
|
JOB SUMMARY:
As a member of the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital (FEH) medical team, the Biomedical Engineer is responsible for setting-up, calibrating, maintaining, repairing and directing others in the proper use of the FEH medical and office equipment on board the aircraft. S/he is also responsible for repairing medical equipment in the local hospitals. Additionally the Biomedical Engineer participates in implementing training programs for biomedical engineers, clinical engineers, biomedical equipment technicians and other personnel members who provide medical technology support in the FEH’s host countries. This position requires up to 45 weeks of worldwide travel per year, mostly to developing countries.

REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Biomedical Engineer has a technical reporting relationship with the Senior Clinical Engineer at headquarters focused on programmatic and technical goals, objectives, and activities and an administrative reporting relationship with the FEH Medical Director. She/he works closely with the FEH Healthcare Technology Trainer and liaises with the colleagues on the FEH team, in New York, country and affiliate offices as well as the local hosts of the FEH programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: |
- Calibrate, maintain and repair medical, computer, and office equipment on the aircraft.
- Set up and disassemble medical equipment for wet labs and supervises setup and disassembly of screening equipment.
- Educate the ORBIS field team members about the use of the medical equipment.
- Teach host country technicians and other healthcare professionals the principles of equipment operation and techniques such as trouble shooting, preventive maintenance, calibration, repair and equipment management.
- Periodically update teaching materials, lectures and workshops based on the needs assessment of the program.
- Participate in planning visits, preparing and designing the biomedical engineering program for the FEH program, as required.
- Maintain professional growth through continuing self-training on new or unknown systems and/or hardware. Maintain inventories of stock non-aviation equipment, related tools and spare parts stored on the aircraft.
- Assist in preparation of program reports documenting evaluations and recommendations.
- Work closely with the Health Care Technology Trainer and provide back-up as needed.
- Participate actively in fund raising events and goodwill tours on and off the plane and represent ORBIS at social functions.
- Assist in the daily cleaning, set-up and packing of the aircraft.
- Participate in special projects and take on other duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: |
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 2-3 years engineering work experience a clinical hospital environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in Clinical Engineering and/or Healthcare Technology Management. This includes:
- Proven in-depth familiarity with different types of equipment and modern health care technology management practices.
- Operating knowledge of computerized medical equipment management systems, quality assurance and technology planning systems.
- Ability to demonstrate repairs and maintenance of medical equipment, especially ophthalmic equipment.
- Previous experience with ophthalmic equipment is a plus.
- Prior international work experience desirable.

- Ability to travel to developing countries up to 80% of the time. This includes having no significant disqualifying factors that would preclude approval of entry visas in the countries on the FEH travel schedule.
