Anesthesiologist
|
JOB SUMMARY:
As an essential member of the
Medical Team on the
ORBIS
Flying
Eye
Hospital, the Anesthesiologist is manages all
anesthesia related needs of the
Flying
Eye
Hospital
programs. This includes the administering of general and local anesthesia,
teaching of anesthetic practice to local doctors and nurses and ensuring
maintenance of all anesthetic drugs and equipment. This position requires up to
45 weeks of worldwide travel per year, mostly to developing countries.

REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The
FEH Anesthesiologist reports to the FEH Medical Director and works closely with
FEH medical personnel (staff ophthalmologist, & nurses), visiting Volunteer
Faculty members, and local medical professionals.
|
|
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: |
- Conduct preoperative
screening of patients recommended for surgery by the ORBIS surgeons;
- Work closely with Volunteer
Faculty & local anesthetists and ORBIS medical staff to ensure the safe and
effective operating room environment on
the
Flying
Eye
Hospital
and the local hospital;
- Administer local and general
anesthesia onboard the
Flying
Eye
Hospital
and monitor patients throughout the perioperative period until discharge;
- Teach general and local
ophthalmic anesthesia/recovery practice and theory to local doctors and nurses.
- Assess the local hospital anesthesia
facilities and, in consultation with the FEH Medical Director, decide on its suitability
for safe anesthesia for small children;
- Maintain an inventory and
order appropriate supplies of anesthesia-related drugs and equipment;
- Ensure accurate accounting of
narcotics and controlled substances;
- As delegated by the FEH
Medical Director, serve as a member of the Program Team to design, plan,
implement and evaluate specific programs.
- Oversee implementation of all
medical emergency policies;
- Represent ORBIS at social
functions during programs;
- Attend weekly staff meetings;
- Comply with approved FEH
policies and procedures;
- Assist in the daily cleaning,
set-up and packing of the aircraft;
- Perform other related duties
as required.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: |
- Medical
Degree + Residency Certificate and Fellowship Certificate (if applicable).
- Board
Exam Certificate from the American Board of Anesthesiology (A.B.A.), the Royal
College Anesthesiologists (F.R.C.A.) or equivalent.
- Current
Medical license or Annual Registration Certificate of the state/province/region
of primary country or nation of practice.
- Min. 3 years post fellowship work experience,
including ophthalmic and pediatric anesthesia
experience;
- Demonstrated
knowledge of A.C.L.S. techniques, Ophthalmic Anesthesia and Peribulbar blocks;
- Advanced Life Support Training
certificate;
- Previous hands-on teaching/training
experience;
- Continuing Medical Education desirable;
- Previous
international work experience in developing countries is a plus.

- Fluency in English – working
knowledge of a second language is a plus.
- Ability to travel to
developing countries up to 80% of the time. This includes having no significant
disqualifying factors that would preclude approval of entry visas in the
countries on the FEH travel schedule.
