Why we support ORBIS:

The Natural Disaster Relief Club was founded in 2011 in response to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. A group of students realized that almost every year we are faced with some form of devastating natural disaster, and wanted form a club that could respond immediately to natural disasters as needed. So to tackle this problem the teens established this club to help raise awareness and money for Japan, and to be ready to fundraise for any natural disaster.

Last year, our club started hearing about the drought in the Horn of Africa. We investigated to find out the cause and severity of the suffering there. Even though the level of severity for the drought has not yet reached drastic measures. We decided it's better to take action now to start raising awareness and money for the Horn of Africa BEFORE conditions worsen.

We came to know about ORBIS and their work. We saw that one of the destinations the Flying Eye Hospital will be serving is Ethiopia; one of the countries that are being affected by the current drought. One of our club members had previously experience a “Dinner in the Dark” event in Hong Kong and introduced us to the idea.

Dinner in the Dark last year was a huge success, so we decided to hold another one this year. Our club’s theme for the 2012-13 school year has been local disasters, namely Hurricane Sandy. We found out that ORBIS works in a few of the Latin American/Caribbean countries affected by Sandy, and it was the perfect connection for our dinner theme.

Our hope is that our High School community can become more aware of the wonderful work that ORBIS is doing and that we can raise funds to help cure blindness in Africa and around the world.
